The Common Cabin is an open-source, modular building created by Common Knowledge to demonstrate how simple, low-impact construction can be accessible, durable and adaptable.

Designed to be built by people with little or no construction experience, the Common Cabin can be assembled quickly, stand for many years and if required, be fully dismantled in a single day and rebuilt elsewhere. To date, more than 500 people have learned to build the Common Cabin through Common Knowledge’s Build School programme, gaining hands-on construction skills and confidence along the way.

The challenge: choosing the right foundation system

Circular construction requires every part of a building to support reuse and adaptability — including the foundations.

Traditional concrete foundations are permanent, carbon-intensive and difficult to reverse. For a building designed to be demountable and low-impact, a more flexible foundation solution was needed.

The solution: ground screw foundations

For this project, Krinner ground screws supplied by Ground Screws Ireland were selected, with installation carried out by FMF Systems.

Ground screws provide a strong, load-bearing foundation without the need for concrete or excavation. They can be installed quickly, require no curing time, and can be fully removed at the end of a building’s life, leaving no permanent impact on the site.

The system used on the Common Cabin is European-manufactured, load-tested and fully traceable, offering reassurance on quality, performance and durability, essential for projects where long-term reliability matters.

The result: performance without permanence

The completed Common Cabin is now used as a highly insulated, airtight teaching and office space. Natural insulation materials, careful detailing and mechanical ventilation ensure excellent comfort and energy performance.

Crucially, the building remains fully demountable. If its use or location changes in the future, it can be dismantled and rebuilt without waste, ground damage or abandoned foundations.
